Settle Station carries the kind of charm you don’t come across often—well-worn but cared for. It’s the sort of place where arrivals and departures still feel like events, not routines. The view down the line is pure countryside, and for a moment, there’s no hurry to be anywhere else.

Thank you for taking the time to visit!

New Brighton evokes a sense of nostalgia for its Victorian past. As the sun dips low, the sky transforms into a canvas of soft oranges and cyans, illuminating the historic buildings. The fading light casts long shadows, inviting a moment of reflection on the beauty and history that still linger in this seaside gem.

A red-roofed village nestled between steep cliffs and the sea. Its narrow streets wind through weathered cottages, leading to a harbor cradled by stone piers and dotted with timeworn fishing boats. Here, the tide’s rhythm whispers of maritime heritage, steeped in stories, and sea air.

Before the Mackinac Bridge stretched across the straits, before ferries carried cars and tourists, McGulpin Point Lighthouse stood watch. Built in 1869, this sturdy structure guided vessels through the often-treacherous waters between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. The keeper’s family lived in the adjoining house, their days marked by the rhythm of oil lamps, storms, and solitude. Restored now, with its cheerful red roof and green shutters, a living reminder of a time when its beam was a promise of safe harbor.

It seemed an appropriate name with the stormy autumn sky brewing that afternoon. Found on the grounds of Castle Howard it was a place for refreshments, reading and relaxation. Maybe the great house wasn't quite big or well situated enough for the Earl and his family. Wow, what a life!

As we started on the head walk at St Bees, I saw these gulls flying by and couldn't resist a shot, just to have a laugh with Andy about my lack of wildlife skills. However, when the photo was downloaded I was so pleased with the result, nearly SOOC with just a little crop off the right.

Perhaps it’s in their unpredictability that diversions find their beauty. They’re reminders that life’s truest charms are often found off the beaten path, in the unplanned pauses where we are least prepared.

Just south of Ludington is a magical world of seventy foot sand dunes and evergreen forests. Here, burrowed amidst the Silver Lake State Park sand dunes, stands the spectacular Little Sable Point Lighthouse. The 1874 tower stands alone at the base of Lake Michigan, over a hundred feet tall and still harboring its original 3rd order Fresnel lens.

I have always had the oddest affinity with the Mackinac Bridge which connects the two halves of Michigan. I remember as a very little girl, crossing that bridge in my parents '59 Chevy station wagon (the one with the winged tail lights). My mother and father chatted on about the amazing Mac that had opened up a few years before this family trip from the suburbs of Chicago to the UP. They talked about the 5 men who had died building that bridge and how it was the longest suspension bridge in the world...at the time. Little did I know that many years later I would be living in Michigan and get to know a man who's father was one of those 5 who lost their lives.

On the way back home from that trip we were in a serious accident when a man plowed into the back of that Chevy wagon. I remember being in the hospital and little else that day. Fortunately no one was killed, but the poor Chevy was written off. We moved to Africa not long afterward, but I never forgot the Mackinac bridge and listening to that conversation, as little as I was at the time. It was a strange moment in 2021 when I stood looking at that bridge again for the first time since that day. I wondered how that it stands unchanged and even the price of crossing has only risen 75 cents since the bridge opened, yet so much of life has passed since then. Standing there I felt I had come full circle (for now at least).

Ocean is in the center of the fountain. He his carried on his triumphal chariot by two horses controlled by two Tritons. One horse is restless, one is calm, like the two moods of the sea. This Triton is the older calm one and holds a twisted shell that is using to announce their passage.

When we visited Rome we had a small bare bones apartment that overlooked the fountain. There wasn't much to it, but "location, location, location". proved to be true. It was an amazing week. Oh and it wasn't shot with a "finepix"camera, it was shot with my Konica Minolta...don't know how the exif came up like that...:-))

The Lake Express Ferry heading out of Muskegon Port and over to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The view from the Park encompasses both the South Pierhead Light and the South Breakwater Light. Adding two more West Michigan lighthouses to my goal of photographing all 20. I'm up to 16 now, need another trip to the Michigan northwest.

...and finally a proper trip out with my newly acquired Z8, well I have had it since early June, just too busy with work to get out.

In this steampunk vision of a railway station, the line between the past and future was blurred, creating a place where the elegance of the Victorian era coexisted with the marvels of a mechanized age. It was a world where every detail, from the charming architecture to the smallest cog, spoke of a time where imagination and innovation thrived together in perfect harmony.
